Teaching and Learning in the 21st Century are Different

Recent events with COVID-19 have caused many schools to close down in order to stop the spread of the virus. In some schools, students may be out through summer. What do students do until then? How do we re-think education?

Part of the answer lies in switching over from face-to-face instruction to online or distance learning. It needs to be done effectively. Many colleges have already made the switch. K-12 needs to follow.

  1. Start with the end in mind: What do we want students to learn?
  2. How do we keep students engaged?
  3. Curriculum, organization and lesson planning are a necessary part of quality education.
  4. Time on task: Learning anything new takes time and patience.
  5. Assessment or comprehension checks are essential components of any teaching and learning.
  6. Apps are an integral part of the online learning experience.
